REST gives you fixed endpoints that return a known shape, which keeps latency and cost predictable for an app rendering a balance. GraphQL lets you request exactly the fields you want in one round trip, which suits exploration but makes cost harder to forecast when the provider bills by query complexity.
Some public explorers allow it, but most commercial providers do not. BitcoinDatabase requires a key, as do Bitquery and Blockchair. Keys let a provider apply rate limits and keep the service stable, which is why unauthenticated access usually stops at a 401 or a throttle.
