Elliptic alternative for Bitcoin sanctions screening data

Elliptic is a serious multi-chain compliance platform for regulated institutions. Here is what we measured on 4 September 2026.

Elliptic scores addresses. BitcoinDatabase indexes the Bitcoin chain so your team can audit its own checks.

Elliptic sells a scored, multi-chain compliance verdict backed by its own attribution dataset and an investigations product. BitcoinDatabase sells the raw indexed Bitcoin chain, so a compliance team can run its own address checks, reproduce the evidence and keep control of the list it screens against.

Side by side

Elliptic vs BitcoinDatabase, honestly

A fair look at what each does well. Both are capable tools. Here is where they differ.

What matters BitcoinDatabase Elliptic
Core deliverable Raw indexed Bitcoin chain you query yourself Risk scores and attribution across many chains
Chain coverage Bitcoin only, indexed deeply 65+ blockchains, bridges and tokens by their own count
Published pricing Usage-based plans, published, no free plan elliptic.co/pricing returned HTTP 404 on 4 Sep 2026
How you start Self-serve signup and an API key Sales conversation; the API answers 401 without a key
Public API host Documented REST plus SQL on one host aml-api.elliptic.co and forensics-api.elliptic.co, both 401
Risk scoring No score. Labels, flows and signals for your own review Yes, proprietary scoring is the product
Entity attribution dataset Labels only, narrower Large proprietary attribution set, a genuine strength
Investigations workspace None. Data layer only Lens, Discovery, Investigator and Ecosystem Monitoring
Regulated-institution track record Early, data-vendor positioning Established with banks and regulators, a genuine strength
AI tooling None built in Copilot plus an MCP endpoint, referenced 13 times in their docs
Custom SQL over raw chain Yes, on Growth and above Not offered; you consume their verdict
Best suited for Teams that must reproduce and audit their own checks Regulated teams buying a defensible third-party verdict

Why teams pick BitcoinDatabase

The fully indexed Bitcoin blockchain, queryable by REST, SQL and dashboards

You cannot audit a score you did not compute

A risk score is a vendor opinion compressed into a number. That is often exactly what a regulated team wants, because it transfers a judgment call to a specialist. The cost is that when an examiner asks why an address was cleared, the answer is the vendor methodology. BitcoinDatabase gives you the addresses, transactions, balances and UTXOs underneath, so your team can reproduce a decision from chain data it holds.

The list underneath matters more than the tool on top

On 4 September 2026 we parsed the OFAC SDN list ourselves. The authoritative XML carries 532 unique Bitcoin addresses, all of which pass checksum validation. The CSV published the same day yields only 252, because its remarks column is capped at 1,000 characters and cuts long address lists off mid-string. Any screening system fed the CSV is missing 280 sanctioned Bitcoin addresses, and no amount of vendor polish above it fixes that.

Bitcoin depth on one chain

Breadth across 65 chains and depth on one are different products. BitcoinDatabase indexes Bitcoin only: address history, UTXO sets, script types, flows and cohort metrics, over REST, SQL and dashboards. If your exposure is Bitcoin, a single-chain index answers address-level questions that a multi-chain risk layer is not built to expose.

Good questions

Elliptic vs BitcoinDatabase, answered

Elliptic does not publish a price. We requested elliptic.co/pricing on 4 September 2026 and it returned HTTP 404. Pricing comes through a sales conversation and is typically scoped by product, seats and volume, so budget for a procurement cycle rather than a card payment. BitcoinDatabase publishes usage-based plans you can read before you talk to anyone.
No, and it would be misleading to say so. Elliptic delivers proprietary risk scores, cross-chain attribution and an investigations workspace that a data API does not replicate. BitcoinDatabase replaces the part of the job where you need raw Bitcoin chain data to build, test or evidence your own checks. Many teams run both.
Yes, key-gated. Its docs are public at developers.elliptic.co, and its screening host is aml-api.elliptic.co. An unauthenticated POST to /v2/wallet/synchronous returned HTTP 401 with the body {"name":"AuthenticationError","message":"Unauthorized","status":401} in about 0.17 seconds on 4 September 2026. A separate forensics-api.elliptic.co host also answers 401. There is no open sandbox.
Several things, and they matter. Cross-chain coverage across 65+ blockchains by their own count, proprietary entity attribution built over years, a real investigations workspace in Lens, Discovery and Investigator, an established track record with regulated institutions and regulators, and AI tooling including a copilot and an MCP endpoint. If you need a defensible third-party verdict, that is what you are buying.
If you are a regulated VASP or bank, you need a vendor that will stand behind a screening verdict, and Elliptic, Chainalysis and TRM Labs all sell that. Where a raw index helps is everything around it: validating the list you ingested, checking the on-chain status of listed addresses, backtesting a rule change, and reproducing an alert months later. Those are chain-data questions.
You can query any address you hold against the indexed chain for balance, transaction history, UTXOs and flows, and surface labels and signals to support your own review. What BitcoinDatabase does not do is issue an accusation, a deanonymization or a compliance verdict on your behalf. Those stay with your team and your policy.
The figures on this page come from the SDN file published 4 September 2026, record count 19,329, parsed and checksum-validated by us the same day. OFAC updates the list without a fixed schedule, so re-pull it before you rely on a count. Our full method and the address-type breakdown are in our sanctions screening buyer guide.
No. BitcoinDatabase provides informational on-chain data and analytics only, not investment, financial or legal advice. Compliance decisions stay with your team. Product and pricing facts about other vendors were measured on the dates stated and can change without notice, so verify before you sign.
